Disappearing Mulch Bag Earns Innovation Award

Weed recede® is a soil degradable bag for organic mulch and other landscape materials. After opening the bag up, it can be used as a weed barrier in landscape beds.

In order to cultivate business investments towards product innovations that deliver a positive social and environmental impact, and offer solutions to plastic pollution, a competition called, Think Beyond Plastic• was launched.

EPA studies show that plastic pollution not only endangers wildlife and degrades ocean habitats, it costs coastal communities more than $500 million each year in dealing with it.

Companies were asked to submit proposals that reduce the use of plastic materials in manufacturing, recycling, packaging, and design.

Bob Hawkinson, an inventor and landscaping specialist for more than 30 years, developed a product that would help eliminate approximately 2 billion plastic bags from the environment. Called Weed Recede???(R)???AE????, it is an all-in-one, soil degradable bioplastic bag that can replace petroleum-based packaging for landscaping products.

The disappearing mulch bag is designed to be installed below the material that was packaged inside it, helping to hold in moisture and suppress weeds, which reduces the use of herbicides. Think Beyond Plastic• awarded the company Most Innovative Emerging Business.

"I've always disliked the fact that so much of the materials used in lawn care and landscaping are packaged in plastic," admits Hawkinson. "With the introduction of bio-plastics and plant-based materials used in consumer products, it made sense to me to apply this information to my business."

Currently, licensing for Weed Recede???(R)???AE???? is available to manufacturers. https://www.weedrecede.com/
