Chamomile is a member of the sunflower family and is popular in aromatherapy. It is often believed to be a calming agent to end stress and aid in sleep.

Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe, Ill. will begin holding classes in February for landscapers of senior citizen homes, correctional facilities, women’s centers and other facilities to design “Gardens That Heal.” They have found a new way to make horticulture therapeutic in order to help distressed patients find a calming way of dealing with their illness.

The 10-day class will feature experts in all fields of gardening, agriculture and horticulture from across the country, including landscape architects, garden designers, architects, interior designers, health-care facility administrators, medical practitioners and students who specialize in gardening.

The garden will teach landscapers and other lawn-care professionals how to apply their knowledge to their businesses and individuals at clinics, correctional facilities and other locations where healing is needed.

The cost of participation ranges from $2,000 to $3,500 and only 25 people are allowed per class. One session is offered in February and the other in October and interest is growing.

A key in horticulture therapy is to allow patients at hospitals and senior centers to engage in constructive and calming activities.
