Landscape maintenance work is among the most dangerous occupation in the country, according to statistics from the U.S. Dept. of Labor?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries for 2005. In that year, a total of 170 ?EUR??,,????'?????<?grounds maintenance workers?EUR??,,????'?????<? died in worksite accidents. The numbers show that ?EUR??,,????'?????<?being struck by (an) object?EUR??,,????'?????<? is the single most common cause of death, with 17 percent of the landscaping fatalities falling in that category. The 2005 statistics are in line with numbers for recent years, with construction labor making the list as a category with one of the highest fatality rates (22.7 fatalities per 100,000 workers). Fatality rates for construction and grounds maintenance were down slightly from 2004 but up slightly from 2003. The 2005 fatality rate for grounds maintenance workers was not published. At the top of the list, fishing boat crew had the highest rate of on-the-job death, with 118.4 deaths per 100,000 workers. Logging workers (92.9) and aircraft and helicopter pilots (66.9) had the second and third highest rates, respectively. Landscaping construction was not listed as a separate category in the report. The good news is that most workplace accidents are preventable. Taking more time for safety is an obvious way to reduce the chance of injury.
