Denver Is Bully for its Bike Program

Twenty-eight new Denver B-cycle stations will be added to the city by the end of May, bringing the system total to 80. The bike system is available to members nine months a year, between 5 a.m. and 12 a.m. The system is closed between December and March.

Denver B-cycle has opened 15 new stations that expand the shared bicycle system to six Denver neighborhoods.

Denver B-cycle is a city-wide public bike sharing system meant for short trips. Membership to the system is purchased online or at station kiosks. Members unlock a bike with their credit card or B-card, and return the bike by just rolling it into a dock. Users who keep a bike longer than the allotted 30 minutes are charged extra.

An onboard B-cycle trip computer allows members that registered online to track all the miles they ride, the calories they burn and the carbon emissions they avoid. Information about each member's use of B-cycles is posted to that member's personal B-cycle web page.

Work on 13 more stations will begin May 20 for a total of 28 new stations by the end of May, bringing the system total to 80.

Funding for the bike station expansion came from Colorado DOT and the Federal Highway Administration, and was applied for in partnership with Denver Public Works. The public grants were matched or supplemented with donations from the Gates Family Foundation, the Anschutz Foundation, the Piton Foundation, the Walton Family Foundation, the Denver Zoo, the Museum of Nature and Science, and Encana.

Denver B-cycle has discount season membership prices to $59 through May 24. The normal season pass is $80. A benefit of membership is special offers and discounts from participating restaurants, retailers and other businesses.

Denver B-cycle is presented by Founding Funder Kaiser Permanente in association with a variety of community sponsors. Denver B-cycle is owned and operated by Denver Bike Sharing, a charitable nonprofit.

Denver Bike Sharing serves as a catalyst for a fundamental transformation in thinking and behavior by operating a bike sharing system in Denver to enhance mobility while promoting all aspects of sustainability: quality of life, equity, the environment, economic development, and public health.
