Deedee Morrison's Public Art Trail

The 12' x 7' x 7' ''Luminosity'' sculpture outside the Daphne (Alabama) Public Library is part of Deedee Morrison's ''public art trail'' from Orange Beach, Alabama to Chattanooga, Tenn. The laser-cut medallions, lit from within the painted steel and Plexiglass structure, suggest the illuminating experience of reading the written word.

Birmingham sculptor and installation artist Deedee Morrison's work is on display from the Pacific Northwest San Juan Islands in Washington to Oklahoma City.

Over the past few years, however, she has created something of a ''public art trail'': five works of public art in Alabama and one just over the state line in Chattanooga on the banks of the Tennessee River. Her latest installation was in May 2012 in Gadsden, Ala.

The ''Public Art Trail'' comprises''

''Lighthouse''—Orange Beach, Ala. Arts Center.

''A Matter of Fiction''?EUR??,,????'?????<

''Luminosity''?EUR??,,????'?????<

''Caged Content''—Washington County Public Library, Chatom, Ala.

''Charm''—Broad Street, downtown Gadsden, Ala.

''Seed Pod''—Renaissance Park, Chattanooga.

Deedee Morrison's studio is on the grounds of the former Republic Steel Mill in Birmingham.

''Seed-Pod'' is an 8' x 12' x 12' solar-powered sculpture in Renaissance Park, Chattanooga, Tenn. The energy from Solartech 125-watt solar panels is scaled down to 12 volts to charge two 92 AH batteries, which run 12 LED floodlights for about 14 hours before needing a recharge. The LEDs only require 10 watts of power each. The combined power of the LEDs is only the equivalent of a single 110-watt light bulb.
