December's Housing Permits, Starts and Completions Up Year Over Year





An estimated 883,000 housing units were completed in 2014, which is a 15.5 percent increase over the 2013 figure of 764,400.

Here are some of the latest new residential construction statistics for December 2014 as jointly announced by the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Privately-owned housing units authorized by building permits in December were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,032,000, 1.9 percent below the revised November rate of 1,052,000, but 1.0 percent above the December 2013 estimate of 1,022,000.

Single-family authorizations made up 667,000 of the total; a 4.5 percent increase over November's 638,000. Authorizations of units in buildings with five units or more counted for 338,000 in December.

Privately-owned housing starts in December were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,089,000. This is 4.4 percent above the revised November estimate of 1,043,000 and 5.3 percent above the December 2013 rate of 1,034,000.

December's single-family housing starts were 728,000; a 7.2 percent increase over the revised November figure of 679,000. The December rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 339,000.

Privately-owned housing completions in December were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 927,000. This is 6.3 percent above the revised November estimate of 872,000 and is 19.6 percent above the December 2013 rate of 775,000.
