A new city program in the District of Columbia offers incentives to homeowners interested in reducing stormwater runoff – a leading cause of water-borne pollutants – from their properties. Homeowners enrolled in the RiverSmart Homes program in D.C. can receive up to $1,200 for installing sustainable landscape enhancements like shade trees, rain barrels, rain gardens, pervious pavers and bayscaping. New developments and large property renovations in the District are required to include stormwater treatment methods, but since most of the District was built before modern methods for controlling and treating stormwater were developed, many properties are without such methods. Landscape contractors and installers in the D.C. area can recommend the RiverSmart Homes program to homeowners to offset the cost of a qualified landscaping project or renovation. The district's Department of the Environment (DDOE) is scheduling appointments to visit properties and perform analyses of what changes can be made to reduce stormwater runoff. Homeowners that wish to apply can fill out an online application or can contact Jenny Guillaume at (202) 535-2252 to enroll by phone. Learn more about the RiverSmart Homeowner program at the link.
