DC Ranch

Scottsdale, Arizona
by FLOOR Associates

A site with sentimental value was designed for a luxury home in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The Residential Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. DC Ranch is one of several great projects we are excited to showcase on LandscapeArchitect.com.

The owners of this home - college sweethearts - have loved this particular parcel of land at the base of McDowell Mountain for many years as it was the setting of several camping trips in their past. In the early 1990s, development was expanding to north Scottsdale and when this area was destined to become a new master planned community, they purchased their camp site as the location of their future home.

Fast forward to 2015, the owners desired a new home that would emulate their beloved campground. The building form is two "tents" focused on two courtyard spaces, a central family gathering space and a pool terrace based on historic cattle watering tanks. One "tent" features expansive views of the McDowell Mountains and city lights. The second tent includes three separate guest suites along an open-air passageway.

The campground is immersed within the desert setting made possible by carefully identifying a limit of work line for construction to protect existing native habitat. Trees and cacti that were within the construction area were salvaged for re-use in the landscape. Areas that were disturbed were re- planted to recreate the desert. The courtyard spaces incorporate a lusher riparian plant palette to emulate desert washes.
