Dazzling with Fiber Optics

Three Projects by Cipriano Landscape Design, Ramsey, N.J.

Pools are always a great looking addition to a residence. One of the specialties of Cipriano Landscape Design in Ramsey, N.J. is designing and constructing custom swimming pools.

After the day?EUR??,,????'?????<

Of course, all pool lighting is not equal, as you will see in this feature. Here we present three Cipriano residential pool projects. These homeowners really wanted their pools to stand out at night, to really shine. We think you?EUR??,,????'?????<

Ciasulli Residence
The goal of this project was to design a well-lit poolscape that was safe and captivating enough to rival the distant skyline the property overlooks. The pool is sprinkled with 200 extremely delicate fiber optic star lights installed directly into the floor. Working around 200 fiber optic star lights on the pool bottom was the greatest challenge of this project. Each glass stem was extremely delicate, making plaster and glass tile installation quite difficult. None of the lights were broken during the pool plastering. Installing fiber optics and low-voltage lights in masonry structures was also challenging.

A three-color iridescent Grecian glass tile mosaic design and border detail were added to the bottom of the swimming pool with a combined profile approximately 30-inches wide. Three-color LEDs illuminate the swimming pool and spa, offering options to contrast the light color of the spa and pool. The LED lights in the swimming pool allow the mosaic design to be seen on the darkest of nights. The LEDs in the spa create a glowing orb on one side of the pool.

At all four corners of the pool, fiber optic Laminar deck jets, installed within the flamed limestone patio, arch into the pool with bright neon colors, adding flashy style to a graceful water feature.

Low-voltage lighting accents important pieces of the overall landscape design. These lights shine up at a flawless iridescent glass tile vanishing edge to shed light on the smooth combination of flowing water and reflected iridescent colors. Low-voltage lighting also highlights the antique gazebo from every side and the ornamental statues scattered about the Tuscan garden design.

Kevo Residence:
The grotto is illuminated via a 250-watt metal halide illuminator and 16 fiber optic lights in a four-color wheel (white, green, magenta and blue), plus 75-fiber optic star lights embedded in the faux stone.

Kevo Residence
The goal for this residence was balanced lighting effects using fiber optic and low-voltage lighting. The main lighting challenges were to effectively use these lighting modes, while keeping within electrical codes. For instance, within 10-ft. of water, fiber optic lighting was employed. Technology and a good plan also allowed the lights and wiring to be concealed within the massive waterfall structure and in the faux stone grotto. Fiber optic lights were built into the faux stone grotto exterior. For the waterfalls and grotto, each fiber optic wire was drilled into the stones to conceal the light source.

Sixteen fiber optic lights (IlluminFx, 250 watt) were built into the faux stone grotto exterior. For the waterfalls and grotto, each fiber optic wire was cached in the stones to conceal the light source.

This project uses fiber optic star lights, fiber optic spot lights, LED swimming pool lights, and low-voltage landscape lighting. The fiber optic technology allowed the wiring to be closer than 10 feet to the water, while remaining up to electrical code.

Underwater LEDs give the water a distinct radiance. Low-voltage lights illuminate the landscape above the waterfall structure.

The grotto has three different types of lighting:

  • 75 fiber optic star lights are embedded in the stone. These star lights have very subtle luminary effects.
  • 16 fiber optic spot lights help define the grotto by illuminating every crack and crevice in a variety of colors.
  • Underwater LEDs give the body of water a distinct radiance that combine with the fiber optics to light up the grotto, or simply produce a faint glow across the cave. For example, the grotto can produce a bright blue glow under the water, resembling the famous Blue Grotto in Capri, Italy. The well-lit grotto provides an attractive setting behind the pool?EUR??,,????'?????<
  • To illuminate the rest of the waterfalls and the spa set in the middle of the stone structure, another 16 fiber optic spot lights line the mountainous waterfall structure with color, depth and excitement. These lights appear scattered across the structure to highlight the waterfalls, the layers of stone and the few plants that protrude softly from the boulders.
  • Low-voltage lights illuminate the landscape above the waterfall structure. Shining up against a full, natural landscape, the lighting allows the landscape to balance out the massive hardscape at night. Good spacing between the lights provides depth as portions of the landscape fall in and out of focus with their proximity to the light source.
  • Six LEDs illuminate the 1,600 square foot body of water.

During the day, the pool is a beautiful scene, but at night the dynamic combinations of lighting dramatically alter the ambience of the space and turn the backyard into a real light show attraction.

Welch Residence:
Fourteen fiber optic lights with a 250-watt illuminator were embedded directly into the base of the decorative barrier wall behind the small pool. Four of the 14 fiber optic lights outline each side of the two pillars. The fiber optic spot lights installed in the two outer pillars shine up to reveal two massive potted plants. Two underwater LEDs illuminate the swimming pool. The centerpiece is an antique medallion salvaged from the old Dorset Hotel building in New York City. The seahorse sculpture and large trough are the pool?EUR??,,????'?????<
