Drought restrictions passed on May 30, 2006 by the five-member Santa Fe, N.M. County Commission means that no new private swimming pools can be built in unincorporated areas of the county this summer. County Commissioner Michael Anaya told the New Mexican the restriction was drafted because of the drought, and that approving construction of swimming pools and building them when the county is running out of water is unjustified.
Within the Santa Fe city limits, residents can still get pool permits but must obtain water-conservation credits from retrofitting toilets with low-flow fixtures.
If the city imposes Stage 3 water restrictions, pool owners would be prohibited from filling pools. Pool installers and homeowners have complained that they were not notified of the decision.
