Cumberland, Md., awarded a $50,000 Growing Greener grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust in 2006, recently marked halfway-point of a two-year project that includes planting some 200 trees. The grant is in partnership with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Forest Service.
A portion of the grant is also to fund satellite imagery to determine how much of Cumberland is covered by tree canopy. The goal is 40 percent. A survey in 2000 showed the canopy then was 32.9 percent and the upcoming survey is expected to be less than 40 percent as well.
Other work includes an update of the tree inventory as well as public awareness, particularly in educating people how to take care of trees and a tree’s role in the ecosystem.
Paul Yockus, chairman of the city’s Shade Tree Commission, also called on city officials to enact a tree ordinance that would require developers to recover impervious ground whether it occurred because of a roof or parking lot.
He urged the city to include community greening requirements in the zoning ordinance, which is being updated.
