The board of The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF) has selected Charles Birnbaum, FASLA, FAAR as the foundation?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s first full-time president, effective May 28, 2007.
TCLF, founded in 1998, is a not-for-profit foundation in Washington, D.C. that seeks to increase the public?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s awareness of U.S. landscapes.
Mr. Birnbaum has 15 years as coordinator of the National Park Service Historic Landscape Initiative, and a decade in private practice with a focus on landscape preservation.
Birnbaum is author of Making Postwar Landscapes Visible, co-author of Pioneers of American Landscape Design, which documents the lives and design work of 162 landscape practitioners, and co-editor of Design with Culture: Claiming America?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Landscape Heritage and Preserving Modern Landscape Architecture I and II.
Birnbaum served as a Loeb Fellow at Harvard?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Graduate School of Design in 1998, and was the recipient of the Rome Prize in Historic Preservation in 2004. He is also an instructor for the National Preservation Institute.
Birnbaum notes that TCLF has some $1.2 million in assets to advance its mission through the website. TCLF has unveiled ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Icons of Modernism,?EUR??,,????'?????<? an online educational module in its ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Cultural Landscapes as Classrooms,?EUR??,,????'?????<? which allows users to ?EUR??,,????'?????<?visit?EUR??,,????'?????<? a landscape. This series is co-sponsored by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. The two previous modules were ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Chicago?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Columbus Park: The Prairie Idealized?EUR??,,????'?????<? and ?EUR??,,????'?????<?City Shaping: The Olmsteds in Louisville.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
TCLF, for the third year in a row, will hold a silent auction at the annual ASLA meeting, this year in San Francisco.
