Multidisciplinary Association Expands Vision
by Keziah Olsen, LASN

The mission of the Council on Vertical Urbanism is to: "define and steward responsible density in cities worldwide."

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) has a new name: the Council on Vertical Urbanism (CVU).

Founded over 50 years ago, the organization is a global network of professionals from all facets of design and policy focused on research and discourse around vertical living. The group began as a researched-focus committee dedicated to "advancing the knowledge and practice of upward growth" by providing "data, insights, and connections [...] to shape better cities."

In this new chapter, CVU is looking "to define and steward responsible density in cities worldwide." Their new scope "[looks] beyond buildings to the entire vertical ecosystem - and everything in between - that makes sustainable, livable urban futures possible."

As of now, no Landscape Architects sit on the group's Board of Trustees, Advisory Board, or College of Fellows, revealing a large expertise gap when it comes to addressing problems like the urban heat island effect with solutions like green roofs, living walls, urban forestry, and more.

LASN reached out to CVU for a comment and had not heard back at the time of reporting.
