American Trails recently announced the winners of the 2019 Tom Petri Annual Achievement Awards, which recognizes use of Recreational Trails Program (RTP) funds. RTP provides funds to the states to develop and maintain recreational trails and trail-related facilities. In an effort to promote RTP funding to states across America, the awards recognize national trails and outdoor recreation organizations. Eligibility requires that projects submitted be completed no later than 2010. The 10 categories for the Annual Achievement Awards focus primarily on planning, maintaining, repairing, facilitating, and/or establishing trails for the community. The ceremony was hosted by the Coalition for Recreational Trails (CRT), which is a federation of national and regional trail-related organizations. Members build awareness of the RTP; the program returns federal gasoline taxes for trail development and maintenance. RTP funds come from the Federal Highway Trust Fund and represent less than one third of the motor fuel excise tax paid into the Trust Fund from non-highway recreational fuel use. 2019 Tom Petri Annual Achievement Award Winners Engaging Public-Sector Partners Duck River Reservoir Recreation Area - Cullman County, Alabama Youth Conservation/Service Corps and Community Outreach Lassen Peak Trail - Lassen Volcanic National Park, California Education and Communication Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center (GNFAC) - Bozeman, Montana Community Linkage Ramanessin Brook Greenway Trails - Holmdel Township, New Jersey Accessibility Enhancement Sassafras Mountain - Pickens County, South Carolina Outstanding State Trail Program Vermont Construction and Design Weed Patch Mountain Trail - Buffalo Creek Park Trailhead, Lake Lure, North Carolina Multiple-Use Management and Corridor Sharing Mount Emily Recreation Area - Union County, Oregon Public-Private Partnerships Enhancing Public Lands Access and Use Pole Mountain Trails - Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, Wyoming Access to And Use of Public Land Palmetto Trail Extension at Stumphouse Mountain - City of Walhalla, South Carolina Maintenance and Rehabilitation Stage Coach Trail Improvements - Vermont Enhancement of Federal Lands Diversified Winter Trail Grooming - Wyoming For more information about the winners, click HERE.
