Working with the National Park Service, New York City has unveiled plans to transform Governor?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s Island into a park linked by ferry to the city. Like the city?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s founders, the project?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s chief designer will be Dutch?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????????landscape architect Adriann Geuze.
The little 172-acre island situated a half-half mile from the southern tip of Manhattan and only a quarter-mile from Brooklyn was called Pagganck (Nut Island) by Native Americans and Nutten Eyelandt by the Dutch, referring to the isle?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s many oak, hickory and chestnut trees. The New York Assembly officially named it Governors Island in 1698.
After the Revolutionary War, two fortifications were built on the island?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????????Fort Jay and Castle Williams, a circular masonry fort with 102 gun ports. The U.S. Coast Guard had a base there, but it closed in 1996.
In 1985, 92 acres of Governors Island was designated a National Historic Landmark, and the Feds transferred the island to the state, the city and the National Park Service in 2003.
What to do with the island has long been debated, but now N.Y. Gov. Spitzer and Mayor Bloomberg have officially named a design team to turn 40 acres of the southern half of the island into a park. Picture rolling hills made from recyclable materials, a two-mile promenade around the island, botanical gardens, wetlands and an amphitheater facing the Statute of Liberty. The ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????rolling hills?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? is a bit ironic, as Manhattan once had rolling hills before it was sliced and sectioned into grids.
The plans call for 3,000 trees on what is now a small golf course. The car-free island would be accessed by a seven-minute ferry ride. Free bikes will be available for visitors to explore the island.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????It will be unsurpassed in ?EUR??,,????'?????<??????????????????????(R)???????+? beauty,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? Gov. Spitzer said, admitting the island has languished for too long.
The design team is West 8, Rogers Marvel Architects; Diller Scofidio + Renfro; Quennell Rothschild and SMWM. The team will be led by Netherland-based landscape architect Adriann Geuze. Mayor Bloomberg deemed the design team ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????an all-star lineup.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
The Governors Island Preservation and Education Corp., which is overseeing development, is exploring the possibility of a gondola to take visitors to and from the island.
