Although all of us love Olmsted?EUR??,,????'???s way with park design, who better than a coyote could truly appreciate the groves, rocky pinnacles, sheltered glades and forested corners? Talk about great places to hide! Talk about terrific escape routes, and all so ?EUR??,,????'??natural?EUR??,,????'?? that the humans have hard time keeping up.
The coyote, first spotted in the park late on Sunday, was finally captured near Belvedere Castle.
A 35-pound male was named ?EUR??,,????'??Hal?EUR??,,????'?? by some police officers and reporters because it was first spotted near the Hallett Nature Sanctuary in the park?EUR??,,????'???s southeast corner. The coyote, who made several narrow escapes even after being shot with a tranquilizer dart, hopped fences, swam ponds, climbed fences, scooted along paths and across meadows, and ran past the boat pond and hid behind Belvedere Castle until his capture.
Adrian Benepe, the city's Park Commissioner, told reporters the coyote may have made its way to Central park from Westchester county via an Amtrak train bridge over the Harlem River. ?EUR??,,????'??For a coyote to get to midtown,?EUR??,,????'?? Mr. Benepe said, ?EUR??,,????'??it has to be a very adventurous coyote.?EUR??,,????'??
For the coyote to choose Central Park means he was also a coyote with a strong sense of the aesthetics of park design.
During its several-day adventure in Central Park, the coyote had been spotted by many but harmed no one, and it had attracted quite a following who tailed him through New York City?EUR??,,????'???s bucolic oasis.
His chasers included not only about a dozen officers dressed in dark blue uniforms and flak jackets armed with tranquilizer rifles, but also park maintenance employees on carts, as well as countless reporters and photographers sprinting after the coyote as it made its way through the paths, meadows, ponds and wooded areas of the park, and a few curiosity seekers among people visiting the park. There were even news helicopters hovering above the park, broadcasting his every move to viewers around the country.
Even Michael Bloomberg, New York?EUR??,,????'???s mayor, felt compelled to comment on the coyote?EUR??,,????'???s travails. During a session with reporters Wednesday morning, he said: ?EUR??,,????'??This is New York, and I would suggest the coyote may have more problems than the rest of us.?EUR??,,????'??
