The Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards (CLARB), aligned with its mission of protecting the public's health, safety, and welfare, spent most of this year virtual but was excited to conduct a hybrid-format Annual Meeting in September where there were a mix of attendees coming together both virtually and in Phoenix, AZ. Throughout the summer, in its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, CLARB's Board of Directors developed key principles to guide the organization's work which were showcased at the Annual Meeting through the planning of the meeting, session content, and an immersive experience where meeting attendees were given the opportunity to learn and see the challenges community members with disabilities face in outdoor spaces. In a partnership with Arizona ASLA and Peaces of Me (peacesofme.org), Annual Meeting attendees toured the Arizona Center and gained a greater understanding of how landscape architecture and design can increase access and equity in the natural and built environment.
Throughout the year, CLARB continued to collaborate with partners in both landscape architecture and the wider regulatory community. As a founding member of the Alliance for Responsible Professional Licensing (ARPL), CLARB promoted and continues to promote a research report ARPL released through Oxford Economics titled "Valuing Professional Licensing in the US." A key finding in this report states: "Among professionals in technical fields requiring significant education and training, a license narrows the gender-driven wage gap by about one third and the race-driven wage gap by about one half." The full report is available on ARPL's website at
responsiblelicensing.org.
Looking ahead to 2022, CLARB will conduct its Job/Task Analysis in the first quarter of the year. Conducted every 5-7 years, this is a study of the profession that ensures the content of the Landscape Architect Registration Examination (L.A.R.E) remains legally defensible and relevant and all members of the landscape architecture community are encouraged to participate.
