Record Set for Construction Spending



WASHINGTON D.C. ?EUR??,,????'??+ Construction spending during November was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $1.146 billion, according to the Commerce Department.

During the first 11 months of 2005, construction spending amounted to 1.031 trillion, nine percent above the $946.3 billion for the same period in 2004.

Spending on private construction was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $892.4 billion, 0.2 percent above the revised October estimate of $891 billion. Residential construction was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $641.9 billion in November, nearly identical to the revised October rate. Nonresidential construction was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $250.5 billion in November, 0.6 percent above the revised October estimate of $249 billion.

?EUR??,,????'??The residential construction market appears to be mixed,?EUR??,,????'?? Ken Simonson, chief economist of the Associated General Contractors of America, said. ?EUR??,,????'??Census figures show new private single-family construction rose 1.5% from October to November; multi-family dipped 0.6%. But a Census report released on December 23 shows sales of new single-family houses in November dropped 11% from October at a seasonally adjusted annual rate, while the number of new houses for sale at month?EUR??,,????'???s end rose 4% from the end of October.?EUR??,,????'??

In November, the estimated seasonally adjusted annual rate of public construction spending was $253.9 billion, 0.3 percent above the revised October estimate of $253.2 billion. Educational construction was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $66.5 billion, 1.3 percent above the revised October estimate of $65.7 billion. Highway construction was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $69.3 billion, 1.6 percent above the revised October estimate of $68.2 billion.
