Construction Spending Remains Healthy



WASHINGTON D.C. ?EUR??,,????'??+ February construction spending was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $1.185 billion the Commerce Department reported Monday.

This figure is 0.8 percent above the revised January estimate of $1.176 billion. The February figure is 7.4 percent above the February 2005 estimate of $1.104 billion. During the first two months of this year, construction spending amounted to $162 billion, 8.5 percent above the $149 billion for the same period in 2005.

Spending on private construction was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $931 billion, 1.2 percent above the revised January estimate of $920 billion. Residential construction was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $665.7 billion in February, 1.3 percent above the revised January estimate of $657 billion. Nonresidential construction was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $265 billion in February, 0.8 percent above the revised January estimate of $263 billion.

In February, the estimated seasonally adjusted annual rate of public construction spending was $254 billion, 0.5 percent below the revised January estimate of $256 billion. Educational construction was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $68 billion, nearly the same as the revised January estimate of $68 billion. Highway construction was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $69.3 billion, 0.7 percent above the revised January estimate of $68.9 billion.
