The Connecticut Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (CTASLA) has named Michael Rettenmeier of Ashford, Conn., and Deborah Zervas of New Haven as the 2009 CTASLA Student Scholarship recipients.
Mr. Rettenmeier received a $2,500 scholarship, while Ms. Zervas was awarded $1,500. These scholarships, funded in part from proceeds from the chapter?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s annual golf outing, are awarded each year by CTASLA to encourage education in the field of landscape architecture and increase awareness of the profession.
“CTASLA is proud to give these scholarships on behalf of our members and sponsors,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? said Brian Cossari, a landscape architect at Hoffman Landscapes in Wilton. Brian is a member of the chapter?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s executive committee and an organizer of the golf event.
Michael Rettenmeier is pursuing a BS in landscape architecture at the University of Connecticut. He is passionate about his choice of major, and enjoys being able to solve problems with landscaping, while also expressing his ideas through design.
?EUR??,,????'?????<????????My favorite part about this major is I get to learn through experiencing realistic projects and working one-on-one with professors in a studio, instead of just listening to a lecture with hundreds of other students in the room,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? Michael explains. ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????It is rewarding to finish a project that you put so much effort into and present it to your classmates to hear what they think.?EUR??,,????'?????<????????
Deborah Zervas is enrolled in the landscape architecture and regional planning program at the University of Massachusetts and seeks an MLA degree. Deborah finds the field of landscape urbanism the most challenging and intriguing. Both a visual artist and designer, her thesis proposal is for a theoretical and experimental study of collage as a medium to express all aspects of landscape.
?EUR??,,????'?????<????????I use collages of all types in my design work, and will investigate how well this medium can communicate spatial relationships, quality of space and intended use to nonprofessionals,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? Deborah explains. Deborah recently initiated a grassroots community campaign to revitalize her New Haven neighborhood, creating a coalition of residents, politicians, city employees and nonprofit organizations that resulted in a new streetscape for Eld Street.
The chapter?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s 2009 Golf Outing will take place Friday, October 16, 2009 at Lyman Orchards Golf Club in Middlefield. Scholarship applications for the 2010 awards are due March 15, 2010.
