Congress Grants $370 million to Rec Trails Program

Congress has passed a transportation bill titled Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users, which grants $370 million to the Recreational Trails Program. At least 30 percent of the funds will go for nonmotorized trails.

This comes as good news to bicycle activist Nancy Karraker, a doctoral student at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, who has been lobbying for bicycle lanes for four years and is optimistic about the new transportation bill.

Bicyclists recently met at the Westcott Community Center in Syracuse, N.Y. to discuss the need for bicycle lanes in the area. Syracuse Mayor Mayor Matt Driscoll said in a statement at the meeting that he expects bicycle lanes to be added to connect the Syracuse south campus to the main campus within the first weeks of November 2005, and hopes to have bicycle lanes added to Euclid Ave. a few weeks thereafter.
