Researchers in England are finding that when homeowners choose paving stones and gravel instead of grass, they may actually be putting garden birds are at risk of starvation.
Concrete, gravel and paved gardens do not need much maintenance, but they also eliminate many of the necessary insects that birds feed to their young. In the north west of England, a quarter of front gardens are already almost completely paved over.
The populations of many garden birds, such as song thrushes, sparrows and starlings, have all decreased over the last three decades.
To combat this, research has shown that even small front gardens are vital for urban wildlife, providing habitat for up to 786 different species of insect.
Officials in England are urging homeowners to plant shrubs and supplement natural food sources year round with bird feeders. Other options are leaving patches of long grass or other vegetation, and ensure a supply of fresh water every day in a shallow dish.
