Modeled on Mass. Law
Smart Growth America, in partnership with the National Complete Streets Coalition, has released a news brief reporting that on July 8, six leaders in the U.S. House and Senate introduced a bill that would require states and metro areas to design and build safer streets. The Complete Streets Act of 2019 would require states to set aside money for Complete Streets projects, create a statewide program to award the money (and provide technical support), and promote design standards that support safer streets. The Complete Streets Act is modeled on a law in Massachusetts, where a state law set aside money for municipalities to build projects to improve road safety. To be eligible for the money, the groups were required to pass local Complete Streets policies and create implementation plans. As a result, dozens of policies have been passed in the state.
