Seven Colorado River Basin states involved in a protracted water battle are reportedly close to a compromise that will allow them to retain some control over their future. The Department of the Interior said that if states don?EUR??,,????'???t agree, federal officials will impose a plan on the region in December 2007. The basin states are at odds over how to allocate river water during times of shortage.
A historic 1922 agreement divided water among the states, but the compact promised more water than the Colorado River system could provide in prolonged drought. An agreement currently in the works reportedly calls for improved cooperative management of Lake Mead and Lake Powell instead of operating each reservoir independently.
