Some critics have called Waterloo Square in Ontario a concrete desert that could best be improved by jack hammering it and hauling away the concrete.”

Architecture Canada disagrees and gave it the 2010 National Urban Design Award for Civic Design Projects.

The jury said the “design exemplifies a good approach to public space and demonstrates a good solution to the grade change on the site.”
Waterloo Square was designed by GSP Group (planners, designers, landscape architects).
