The city of Alpharetta, Ga. has been cited for violating its own watering ban. A police officer noticed the sprinklers at City Hall watering shrubbery three times earlier this week and issued the city a warning and two citations. Assistant City Administrator Robbie Rokovitz said he asked that the sprinklers be shut off after officials received the warning, but four days later the officer noticed the sprinklers were still on. They have now been shut off.
Rokovitz originally said the city would not have to pay the $500 fine because as he puts it, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?re not in the business of paying ourselves.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
However, the Alpharetta City Council came up with a novel plan to pay off a fine for violating its own outdoor watering ban.
Council members dug into their own pockets.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?We?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ve got to lead,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Councilman D.C. Aiken. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ll all chip in and pay it. We can?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t just say we?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?re the city, we?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?re not going to pay it.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
?EUR??,,????'?????<?We?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?re putting our money where our mouth is,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Councilman Jim Paine.
Alpharetta outlawed outdoor watering because of the severe drought.
