The outsourcing will save the city more than $80,000. Hiring the contractors will eliminate nine full-time positions and four part-time workers. Six of the nine full time workers who would be laid off have been offered jobs in other areas of city government. City workers mowed the parks once every two or three weeks. The new contracts will require mowing every seven days.
Alamo Lawn Care was the only Corpus Christi company to win a contract. D-Bar Contractors of San Benito andMaldonado Nursery of San Antonio bid significantly lower than local competitors, Parks and Recreation Director Michael Morris said.
Councilman Mark Scott, who has advocated for privatizing city services, said the change was a step in the right direction.
