City Escape at Amsterdam Vale

New York City
by Aaron Schmok, LASN

Situated between 10 residential buildings in New York City, the Amsterdam Vale garden is a 3,000 square-foot park space designed by Smith & Architects that blends the architecture of the connected buildings with the nature found in the garden setting. This space features small seating areas, a BBQ area, and a large dining table. To the right are private terraces for the studio apartments on the ground floor.

Leading into the garden area, guests travel through this walkway featuring a preserved moss wall on the left and digital package lockers to the right. The moss extends the theme of bringing the garden to the street through various senses as it possesses a visual appeal, omits a natural scent engulfing this enclosed section, and features room that is remarkably quiet. While containing various preserved ferns and other plants, the moss-based wall requires no watering.

The garden entrance and main fa??ade of the building package room is enhanced by a hand-fabricated iron vine sculpture in front of a framing wall made of basalt in flamed, honed, and chiselled finishes. These vines introduce the team's goal of creating a garden oasis along the busy street. This concept is expanded by the overall entrance design as it gives passersby a glimpse into the garden. Smith & Architects designed a custom logo for the Amerstdam Vale and inscribed the logo onto the entrance gate.

Paving in the park is a permeable plank paver from Unilock called Eco-Promenade. While excavating 48 inches of soil to meet handicap accessibility, the team discovered a large outcropping of Manhattan schist only 12 inches underground. Removal of the shist was found to be an expensive process, so they decided to integrate them into the landscape design.
Bent steel edging separates the pavers and the mulch covered planted area which has since grown to cover the space, including all the mulch. The plants found in this space include serviceberry, astilbe, climbing hydrangea, lily turf, cinnamon fern, Hosta, and Solomon's seal.

Nestled amidst the bustling streets of New York City's Upper West Side, Amsterdam Vale was designed by Smith & Architects of Astoria, New York to establish an ambient garden space in the midst of an energetic city. Originally comprising ten historic walk-up apartment buildings at the intersection of 83rd Street and Amsterdam Avenue, this project was considered a departure from conventional urban development.
The Amsterdam Vale project addresses the properties between 200-210 W 83rd Street and 466 Amsterdam Avenue, which are all owned by the same owner, and establishes a communal garden for renters in these buildings. This section of Broadway was called Bloemendael Road, meaning Vale of Flowers, so the team envisioned a park filled with flowering plants even before the buildings filled with new residents.

Spearheaded by Smith & Architects in collaboration with McLaren Engineering Group, Amsterdam Vale embodies a holistic approach to urban design, blending heritage preservation, ecological sustainability, and community-centric living. The new park space represents an innovative vision on urban revitalization and sustainable living.

Community Engagement and Impact
Beyond its aesthetic appeal and ecological significance, Amsterdam Vale has had a strong impact on the surrounding community. Through extensive community engagement initiatives, Smith & Architects solicited input from residents, local businesses, and community organizations, ensuring that the project met the diverse needs and aspirations of its stakeholders. Moreover, the integration of sustainable design features has contributed to the neighborhood's resilience and adaptability in the face of environmental challenges, setting a precedent for future urban development initiatives. The creation of this vibrant public space has catalyzed social interaction and community cohesion, fostering a sense of belonging and pride among the residents.

Entrance and Gatehouse
The journey into Amsterdam Vale begins at the gatehouse, a meticulously crafted structure decorated with an iron vine sculpture. Beyond the ornamental piece, the gatehouse serves as a functional hub, housing electronic package lockers for residents, which is an essential amenity for the ten apartment buildings. Draped with flowering vines that cascade over the street, the gatehouse exemplifies the principles of biophilic design, seamlessly integrating nature into the urban fabric. Within its confines, a wall of moss imparts a serene ambiance, offering a moment of respite from the frantic pace of Amsterdam Avenue.

Garden Design
Venturing beyond the gatehouse unveils the verdant sanctuary at the heart of Amsterdam Vale. Designed to transport residents from the noise of city life into a secluded space, the garden boasts a diverse arrangement of plant life, including native trees, flowering plants, and Manhattan schist salvaged during excavation. The choice of materials, from basalt to chiselled bluestone, reflects Smith & Architect's commitment to sustainability and ecological harmony. Private patios nestled amidst the greenery provide secluded retreats while communal gathering spaces foster a sense of kinship among residents.

These planted areas are shaped to create intimate gathering areas. Solid bluestone steps with a chiselled finish lead into the 3,000-sqaure-foot garden. A concrete retaining wall was formed with rough boards to encourage it to weather faster and create pockets for moss and lichen to grow.

Integration of Natural Elements
A defining feature of Amsterdam Vale is its seamless integration of natural elements into the urban landscape. Manhattan schist, an emblem of the city's geological heritage, punctuates the paved areas. The use of rough boards in constructing the concrete retaining walls creates niches for moss and lichen to flourish, enriching the garden's biodiversity. Flowering vines adorn custom iron structures, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces and inviting residents to reconnect with nature.

Structural Engineering
The success of Amsterdam Vale required a delicate balance of architectural vision and structural ingenuity, a task undertaken by McLaren Engineering Group. From construction administration to temporary shoring design, the firm seamlessly integrated the garden space into the existing urban fabric. Innovative solutions, such as new stair structures and structural renovations of annex buildings, underscored McLaren's commitment to realizing the project's ambitious vision while preserving the integrity of the historic structures.

Conclusion
Through meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding of community needs, Smith & Architects have redefined urban living in the heart of New York City. As residents immerse themselves in the lush greenery of Amsterdam Vale, they are invited into a space of respite from the bustling streets. This project serves as a model for sustainable urban development, inspiring future generations to embrace the harmonious coexistence of city life and nature in the quest for a more livable and vibrant urban environment.
