The artist Christo, known for his landmark-spanning fabric installations in California, Paris and Berlin in the 1970s and '80s, has come up with plans for a similar show in New York's Central Park.
His newest features 7,500 saffron-colored ?EUR??,,????'??gates?EUR??,,????'?? that will hang from 16-foot steel supports spaced along the park's paths and trails. The gates were scheduled to appear by Feb. 12 and stay up through Feb. 27. The installation will cost about $21 million.
Jeanne-Claude and Christo say they will pay for the show themselves.
?EUR??,,????'??We do not accept sponsorship,?EUR??,,????'?? the artist's wife said. The pair fund their installations through photographs and other renderings of Christo's work, she said.
Winter was chosen to dramatize the new show's color and fabric, which were expected to billow in the breeze for about two weeks.
?EUR??,,????'??We have chosen February when the trees are leafless so that from far, far away you can see,?EUR??,,????'?? Jeanne-Claude said.
