In the spirit of its Olympic bid, Chicago opened its new playground at Jesse Owens Park on September 18. Jesse Owens, of course, is the sporting icon who won four gold medals in the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, an event in keeping with Hitler?EUR??,,????'?????<

Jesse Owens Park was funded by the AllState Foundation for the Chicago Park District and features an Olympic stadium theme, complete with play areas and games for kids of all ages and abilities. The new playground at Jesse Owens Park is the design of Chicago-based Hitchcock Design Group and features play equipment from Little Tikes Commercial.

Large custom panels invite kids to compete in a five-event circuit: a 75-meter race, pull-ups, long jump, jump-touch and overhead ring race. After completing the activities, kids can award each other Gold, Silver or Bronze ratings for activities in the medal podium area.

Personalized Play
All areas and play structures in the playground are fully accessible, allowing children of all ages and abilities to play and interact.

A two-to five-year old play area features a custom tot-size ticket booth, a double slide and climber.

For the older set, a separate play area features sports-themed equipment, including climb-through rings, a hoop climber, independent spinner, jump-touch bar and chin-up bar.

Colors and artwork throughout the park enhance the Olympic theme. While most city parks opt for neutral, natural colors, the new Jesse Owens Park playground features bright pops of Olympic ring colors in red, blue, black, yellow and green. The designers worked with the Chicago Public Art Group to create colorful mosaics for the medal stand area and the entry piers. The entry piers feature pictograms of the winter and summer Olympic sports fired onto tiles.
