Chandler, Ariz., Approves Noise Ordinance

According to a city memo, a noise complaint from a resident spurred officials to research restrictions in other cities. It was learned that Chandler is the only city, other than Coolidge, that does not specify construction time limits by ordinance, the memo said.

The city council of Chandler, Ariz., approved a new construction noise ordinance, which states that construction crews working within 500 feet of residential property must stop work between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. on weekdays and between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. on weekends and holidays. Hours for concrete pouring are between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. every day.

The new law is part of a city code that includes misdemeanor curfew, smoking and graffiti violations and carries a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $2,500 fine. It provides exemptions for emergency construction work necessary for such services as water, sewer, electricity, gas or communications, or to remedy an immediate safety problem.
