Celebrating the 100 Year History of Landscape Architecture (part II) by Marisol Zubizarreta Another important project recently developed is the Historic Orchard Stabilization--Home of Franklin Delano Roosevelt National Historic Site-- which represents the only property ever to be occupied by a US President throughout his lifetime, from birth until death. To this day, the property continues to display high integrity to its appearance at the time the National Park Service acquired it, upon Roosevelt's death. The historic orchard which was planted in 1916 remained intact throughout FDR's stewardship of the estate, however, began to deteriorate shortly thereafter. Working with orchard preservation specialists from National Parks in the northeast, the condition of the orchard was stabilized and improved. Through these and many other projects, the Olmsted Center has set a definite trend of preserving relevant historical sites in the U.S. and will continue to propagate Olmsted's view of a "democratic park system." Olmsted's philosophy of "preserving green areas for the enjoyment and recreation of all," has remained and continued to flourish with 5000 projects recorded in the Olmsted Archives, which include national, site, and city parks. By commemorating the 100th year history of landscape architecture, many can reflect back on the transitions and accomplishments that have taken the profession to a higher level, but certainly there will be new challenges that Landscape Architects will have to face in the future. Landscape Architects that have also participated in stewardship programs to help further communities, have been members of societies such as AILA and ASLA, that have driven the profession from "virtual obscurity to greater public recognition," stated by Barry Starke, FASLA President 1998. We take for granted the fact that we can enjoy green areas around a crowded city, or stroll down a shopping center area with well designed water fountains, so it is definitively important to celebrate those innovative individuals who have granted us these privileges. lasn
