Celebrating 40 Years & 20,000 Landscape Architects

April 2025 Residential Commentary
by Nathan Schmok, Associate Publisher, LASN

The April issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News (LASN) showcases custom residential projects with a special focus on the growing role of Landscape Architects in multi-family residential developments. This edition highlights your expanding influence in shaping apartment complexes, master-planned communities, and mixed-use developments.

We extend our sincere thanks to all the contributors who shared their outstanding projects, as well as to our loyal readers and advertisers for their continued support. We are also excited to celebrate two major milestones: LASN is now mailed to 20,000 Licensed Landscape Architects - virtually every PLA in the nation - and this year we are proud to mark our 40th Anniversary with the upcoming July Issue.

In recent years, the role of Landscape Architects in multi-family residential projects has grown significantly. Developers and city planners now recognize that well-designed outdoor spaces enhance quality of life, boost property value, and promote sustainability. Landscaped courtyards, rooftop gardens, and communal parks serve as outdoor extensions of living spaces, providing areas for relaxation, socialization, and recreation.

Research shows that properties with high-quality landscaping experience increased desirability, commanding higher rents and lower vacancy rates. Shared amenities like BBQ areas, fire pits, and garden courtyards foster community interaction, improving tenant retention. Beyond aesthetics, Landscape Architects incorporate eco-friendly features such as rain gardens, drought-tolerant plantings, and permeable pavements, promoting sustainability and reducing long-term maintenance costs.

A particularly exciting trend is the rise of all-in-one community developments, also known as mixed-use or master-planned communities. These large-scale projects blend residential, commercial, and recreational spaces into a cohesive environment. Landscape Architects play a key role in designing interconnected outdoor spaces, including walking trails, plazas, and green corridors, which enhance walkability and convenience.

In all-in-one communities, you thoughtfully balance public and private outdoor areas. While parks and plazas promote social interaction, rooftop gardens and secluded courtyards offer peaceful retreats for residents. This balance creates dynamic, comfortable living environments.

Furthermore, Landscape Architects contribute to placemaking and community identity. Through creative use of plant palettes, water features, and public art, you help establish a unique sense of place that strengthens the development's character and appeal.

As the demand for sustainable, livable communities continues to grow, Landscape Architects will remain essential in shaping the future of residential design.

You have continued to show the development industry that you more than capable of handling not just high-end custom residential, but also commercial-level residential projects, a trend that will continue to expand the field and increase the projects undertaken by Landscape Architects for years to come. We welcome your comments, insights, and project submissions on this growing trend. Thank you for being part of this exciting evolution of Landscape Architects!

God Bless . . .
