CELA Announces 2015 Faculty Awards and Recognitions





CELA, the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture, has announced the recipients of the 2015 Faculty Awards. The honorees were recognized at the CELA Annual Conference in March.




Ten faculty members from 9 different CELA-member schools were recognized for their outstanding contributions to academic practice at the 2015 CELA Annual Conference, held March 25-28 at Kansas State University. Congratulations to the winners:

Excellence in Studio Teaching Award (Sr.)
Professor C. Timothy Baird, ASLA, PLA – Pennsylvania State University

Timothy Baird is Professor of Landscape Architecture at Pennsylvania State University and has taught at five other universities over the past thirty years. Baird's practice career spans over forty years and he is currently Adjunct Principal at Landworks Studio, Inc. in Boston.

Excellence in Studio Teaching Award (Jr.)
Professor Joshua F. Cerra - Cornell University

Joshua F. Cerra, is an Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture and Director of Undergraduate Studies at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. Cerra has practiced as an environmental designer and ecologist for over 20 years combined.

Excellence in Research and/or Creative Works Award (Sr.)
Professor William C. Sullivan, Ph.D. - University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

William Sullivan is Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign where he focuses on creating healthier, more sustainable places. Sullivan is past president of the Council of Environmental Deans and Directors, and served 6 years as a member of the National Academies' Institute of Medicine Roundtable on Environmental Health Science, Research, and Medicine.

Excellence in Research and/or Creative Works Award (Sr.)
Professor M. Elen Deming, DDES, ASLA - University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

Dr. M. Elen Deming is Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where she teaches design studio, history and theory, and research design. She taught landscape architecture at the State University of New York (SUNY) College of Environmental Science and Forestry for 15 years, and edited Landscape Journal from 2002 to 2009.

Professor Simon Swaffield, Ph.D. - Lincoln University Faculty of Environment, Society & Design

Simon Swaffield is Professor of Landscape Architecture at Lincoln University, New Zealand where he has taught since 1982. He is Honorary Professor at the University of Copenhagen.

Deming and Swaffield published Landscape Architecture Research: Inquiry/Strategy/Design (Wiley 2011), to describe the activity and breadth of research strategies in the field.

Excellence in Research and/or Creative Works Award (Jr.)
Professor Jun-Hyun Kim, Ph.D. - Texas A&M University
Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning

Dr. Jun-Hyun Kim is an assistant professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning at Texas A&M University. Dr. Kim has been named the recipient of the 2014-2015 Montague-CTE Scholar award, and the 2014 Outstanding Instructor Award from his university. He has served as a regional director for the CELA since 2013.

Professor Roxi J. Thoren - University of Oregon
Department of Landscape Architecture

Roxi Thoren is an associate professor and director of the Fuller Center for Productive Landscapes at the University of Oregon, where she investigates the integration of productivity in landscape architectural design, including a series of research and design projects around agriculture, forestry, and power.

Excellence in Teaching Award (Jr.)
Professor Taner R. Ozdil, Ph.D. The University of Texas at Arlington Program in Landscape Architecture

Taner Ozdil is an associate professor of landscape architecture and associate director of research for the Center for Metropolitan Density at the University of Texas at Arlington. He is currently a Board Member of the North Texas Congress for the New Urbanism and active research-team member of Vision North Texas.

Excellence in Service-learning Award (Jr.)
Professor Victoria Chanse, Ph.D. - University of Maryland Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture

Vikki Chanse's research and teaching address cross-disciplinary dimensions to civic engagement in design and planning. Her service-learning projects focus on participatory, community-based approaches to develop local responsive designs that consider community needs and landscape changes under different scenarios of sea level rise and stormwater management.

Outstanding Administrator Award
Professor Sean Edward Michael, Ph.D. – Utah State University Head, Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning

Dr. Sean Michael, Professor and Department Head of Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning (LAEP), joined Utah State University in 2008. Most recently, his authoring of LAEP's differential tuition proposal was approved by USU's Board of Trustees, which will return $100,000 annually to students in North America's 13th oldest landscape architecture program.

Jurors for the 2015 awards included Gary Austin (Idaho), Ron Stoltz (Arizona), Jesus Lara (Ohio State), Michael Robinson (Auburn), and Hala Nassar (Clemson), CELA 2nd Vice President and chair of CELA's Standing Committee on Awards and Recognitions.
