Imagine driving a Cat 236 Skid Steer Loader 4,000 miles from New York City to Los Angeles. Not the usual choice of transportation, but it?EUR??,,????'???s the vehicle chosen by Caterpillar??????oe and the Cat??????oe Dealer Network to support the ?EUR??,,????'??Drive Against Diabetes,?EUR??,,????'?? a fundraising campaign to raise awareness of juvenile type 1 diabetes. Sgt. Craig Schultz, a New York state corrections officer, will drive the Cat 236 beginning September 1 to raise money for juvenile diabetes research. The skid steer loader was donated by Caterpillar and the Syracuse Supply Company in Syracuse, N.Y. As part of his fundraising efforts, Sgt. Schultz, aka Skid Steer Man, will be making several stops at Caterpillar dealers and Cat rental store locations along the way. ?EUR??,,????'??At Caterpillar, we strive to contribute toward a global environment in which all people can work safely and live healthy productive lives,?EUR??,,????'?? said Glen Barton, chairman and CEO of Caterpillar, Inc. ?EUR??,,????'??We are a proud supporter of the Drive Against Diabetes and its positive effort to eradicate [the] disease.?EUR??,,????'?? Type 1 juvenile diabetes affects more than one million children and adults in the U.S. The disease causes the pancreas to stop producing insulin. People with juvenile diabetes must take multiple injections of insulin daily or receive insulin through a pump to survive. Complications from the disease include blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, stroke and amputation. Craig Schultz?EUR??,,????'???s father, Harold, was an insulin dependent diabetic. The disease had a daily impact on the lives of Craig and his two brothers. In August 1998, at the age of 61, juvenile diabetes took Harold from his family. ?EUR??,,????'??My father?EUR??,,????'???s passing was particularly difficult for me and my family,?EUR??,,????'?? recalls Mr. Schultz. ?EUR??,,????'??Although I?EUR??,,????'???ve been active in my community and volunteered my time for JDRF [Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International], I always had this feeling in my heart that I could do more. Now with the support of generous organizations such as Caterpillar and its dealer network, I now have the opportunity to make a greater contribution and aid in the fight of this devastating disease.?EUR??,,????'?? Prior to his career in corrections, Mr. Schultz owned a landscaping business and was skilled with a skid steer, including employing it to plow snow from church parking lots and the driveways of senior citizens free of charge. He also assisted in the cleanup of Buffalo, New York streets on several occasions. ?EUR??,,????'??My father purchased my first skid steer for me,?EUR??,,????'?? he explains. ?EUR??,,????'??While conceptualizing the idea for the Drive Against Diabetes, I thought of how I?EUR??,,????'???ve used my skid steer to help others in the community. Taking my contributions a step further, I thought what better way to honor my father and help those with juvenile diabetes by driving [it] cross-country to raise money for research.?EUR??,,????'?? ?EUR??,,????'??The dedication of JDRF volunteers, who have seen first hand the devastation of juvenile diabetes and its complications with loved ones, is paramount in JDRF?EUR??,,????'???s effort to find a cure through research,?EUR??,,????'?? said Peter Van Etten, president and CEO of the JDRF. ?EUR??,,????'??We commend Craig Schultz and the Caterpillar team for undertaking a journey that will generate national awareness as well as support JDRF?EUR??,,????'???s research funding.?EUR??,,????'?? Proceeds from the Drive Against Diabetes campaign will be awarded to the JDRF. Donations can be made through the Drive Against Diabetes website and at participating Caterpillar dealers and the Cat Rental Store locations along the route.
