Knoxville is one of 39 Tennessee municipalities with ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Tree City USA?EUR??,,????'?????<? designation from the National Arbor Day Foundation. To help assure Knoxville maintains this designation, Legacy Parks Foundation, with technical and financial assistance from the landscape architects at Carol R. Johnson Associates (CRJA), established the Legacy Tree Fund in 2009 to increase community tree planting.
The Legacy Tree Fund is different from previous tree planting programs in that it directs planting larger trees, using improved planting methods and materials and increasing tree care during the first two year?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s growth.
For each $300 tax-deductible contribution to the fund, a tree is planted and maintained in publicly owned land in Knoxville or Knox County, wherever there is the greatest need, be it a park, an open spaces or streetscape.
All Legacy Tree Fund donors receive a specially commissioned print acknowledging their gift to the community. Smaller donations go to extending the initial period of tree care and maintenance.
For its 50th anniversary, CRJA worked closely with the city of Knoxville staff to develop specific guidelines and specifications for Legacy Trees. A demonstration planting was also performed to show an approach to thoughtful tree selection, enhanced soil profile and increased soil volume for tree root development.
In partnership with Moon?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Tree Farm, DeepRoot, Cortese Tree Specialists and John Deere Landscapes, 25 Legacy Trees were donated and planted along streets in Knoxville. This spring, an additional 26 Legacy Trees from CRJA will be planted in locations along Neyland Greenway, at James White Fort, at the new Downtown Dog Park and Tommy Schumpert Park in Knox County.
