Carmaker Launches Smart Home

During a Webcast on March 25, the Honda Smart Home, which was a year in the making, was publicly unveiled.

Built on the campus of the University of California at Davis, the home is said to go beyond zero net energy: producing more electricity on-site from renewables than it consumes from the grid. The car manufacturer reports that its daily consumption will include recharging a Honda Fit EV for commuting.

The home features several pieces of innovative technology, including a Honda-designed home energy management system, battery energy storage, DC-to-DC solar EV charging, and smart grid technology that enables home-to-grid connectivity.

In addition to showcasing Honda's vision for sustainable, zero-carbon living and personal mobility, the home will function as a living laboratory where the company, along with researchers from U.C. Davis, Pacific Gas and Electric, and others, will evaluate new technologies and business opportunities involved with transportation, energy and the environment.
