CARBO Landscape Architecture

Baton Rouge, Louisiana
by Keziah Olsen, LASN

Since 1995, CARBO Landscape Architecture (CLA) has honed their design and project management skills to become a leading landscape architecture firm. Their portfolio reflects a lasting commitment to environmental stewardship and a keen awareness of each place's identity. Their passion and dedication to client-focused service have led to the successful completion of numerous projects across the Southeastern United States. CLA creates designs that harmoniously blend history, culture, and legacy to resonate with communities. For three decades, the firm has crafted meaningful outdoor spaces that connect communities with innovative solutions, striking a balance between environmental restoration and recreation, and seamlessly integrating open spaces into the environment. Their design philosophy blends art, ecology, and cultural essence to craft elegant, timeless spaces that harmonize client visions with the unique character of each place, inspired by Danish-American Landscape Architect Jens Jensen's belief that "art has its roots in the soil."

New Orleans Botanical Garden; New Orleans, LA

In 2013, CLA completed the master plan for the New Orleans Botanical Garden's new Visitor Center. The new Arrival Garden greets visitors with a vibrant space featuring a dramatic, 12-foot-tall, 105-foot-long living wall that includes two 10-foot portals serving as gateways to the adjacent gardens. A black granite water table provides gentle sound and movement, with choreographed nozzles that propel water into the air. The garden also has custom benches lit from beneath and colorful bands of planting that extend through the space, integrating a modern design while complementing the garden's formal geometry. The project received a 2018 Louisiana ASLA Merit Award. Photo Credit: Zach Broussard, PLA, CARBO

Bolton Avenue Streetscape; Alexandria, LA

The city of Alexandria, Louisiana in partnership with CLA, created a transformative corridor enhancement plan for Bolton Avenue that aims to foster positive redevelopment in a once-thriving commercial corridor. The conceptual plan focuses on improving walkability and bike-ability by integrating wide sidewalks and dedicated bike lanes while ensuring ADA compliance. To address longstanding flooding issues, rain gardens were introduced to enhance stormwater management with canopy trees and understory plants that filter pollutants, provide shade for pedestrians, and soften the streetscape. Additional improvements include new lighting, custom bus shelters, and seating areas, all designed to create a safer, more inviting environment. The project earned a 2017 Louisiana ASLA Merit Award. Chinquapin Residence; Shreveport, LA

The owners of this new West-Indies-style home commissioned CLA to create a retreat that would also provide a unique entertainment venue. The partially wooded site was embellished with newly planted native trees and a dense evergreen screening. The house is designed to feel as if it is tucked away in the wooded setting even though it is in the center of a subdivision. Because the homeowners entertain regularly, both vehicular and pedestrian circulation were particularly important. Oxbow Oasis; New Roads, LA

The exterior renovation of this quaint family home combines a contemporary design approach with a relaxed feeling of Southern Louisiana lifestyle. The homeowners enlisted CLA to honor the character and small-town charm of their historic home while updating the property in a clean, bold, and modern way. The team improved site circulation, provided additional living space, and created multiple new venues for entertaining. The site design accentuates familiar materials and native plants, now presented in a refined and contemporary way. Rooted in their cherished hometown, the property reflects the family's spirit and provides a modern sanctuary. The project received a 2024 Louisiana ASLA Merit Award.
