Blu Harbor, Redwood City, CA

Formerly a marshland, this complex 12-acre site surrounded by a peninsula along Redwood Creek and across from Bair Island, provides a new extremely desirable community for all ages. The development was designed to maximize views of the shoreline and to take advantage of its close proximity to downtown Redwood City. Amenities include a clubhouse, pool, marina, extension of the Bay Trail, bocce ball courts, picnic areas, scenic overlook points, access to the SF Bay Water Trail, playground, dog washing facilities, outdoor kitchen, and lots of bicycle parking for the outdoor enthusiasts. In addition to the sensitivity to the view and alternative transportation, the development was designed to create a fluid yet subtle transition between public and private spaces through the use of bay friendly and water wise plants and materials. Old Town Plaza, Elk Grove, CA

Above & Right: Working with the City of Elk Grove, CALA helped the community's vision of a park and event space in the historic Old Town district come to life. The overall park program features a large open-air pavilion to host events, a concert lawn, gateway plaza, picnic areas, drought tolerant planting, permeable paving, and supporting facilities. Refining the master plan and strategizing the use of semi-custom structures helped reduce costs and time while still maintaining the rustic, historic feel of the district. The plaza's grand opening was at the end of 2021 with hundreds of people in attendance, which included an Elk Grove homegrown NASCAR Cup champion, Kyle Larson. ACEC, ASCE and ULI award winner.

UC Davis Dairy Athletic Complex, Davis, CA

Below: When UC Davis Campus Recreation saw a need to increase their recreation field resources to accommodate growing sports club and intramural sports programming needs, they decided to convert their natural turf Dairy Recreation Field into an all-purpose, all-weather synthetic turf sports complex. The complex design not only addresses sports programming needs, but also includes other facilities for student use, such as restrooms, storage, bike racks and bench seating. CALA also prepared a comprehensive synthetic turf system analysis which compared several manufacturers, turf styles and turf system component options based on over thirty characteristics. This analysis provided the project team with the information needed to select the most appropriate system for the project's specific needs. Including environmentally sustainable elements was at the forefront of the project goals and was achieved through the implementation of energy-efficient field and pedestrian lighting, the construction of bioswales for stormwater quality/groundwater infiltration, and the use of recycled materials in components of the synthetic turf system. The completed 125,000 square foot field includes a full-sized women's lacrosse field, a full-sized men's lacrosse field, full-sized soccer field, and three intramural soccer fields.
