The Department of Transportation (DOT), established by an act of Congress (October 1966) will invest more than $300 million in 72 transit projects within the state of California, and are said to improve air quality for residents.

The $301 million in funding will help Caltrans upgrade transit service, purchase eco-friendly buses, and help to modernize current transit stations. Specific projects received the awards because they are all currently underway and the awards will allow those projects to be completed at their scheduled times.

"These projects give Californians a viable alternative to using their cars," said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty in a statement. "Public transit reduces traffic congestion and protects the environment by lowering greenhouse gas emissions."

The funding for these awards comes from California's Proposition 1B, passed in 2006, which allowed for $3.6 billion over a 10-year period to improve and build upon the state's public transit system. Since its passage, more than $2 billion for 750 transit projects has been provided through Proposition 1B, with about 340 of those projects already completed.
