The Link at Playa Vista
Los Angeles, Calif.
This urban walk is a 3/4 mile long by 27' wide park connecting 2 existing neighborhoods: one residential, one office. The design inspiration was to create a linear park adjacent to a major thoroughfare, and give a social, interactive, highly variable walking experience; an experience that elevates the community and informs the neighborhoods of the idea of shared living. This amenity interconnects the existing neighborhood with new neighbors, offices, technology companies and retail destinations through a gallery-style walkway passing through social gardens, event areas and quiet retreats.

Developer- Freehold Communities
This fully approved project started more than a decade ago as a golf course community that failed to open due to the economic downturn of 2008. Before shutting down, the site's former developer graded the property and installed most of the infrastructure including an 18-hole golf course, streets and utilities to serve the project's first phase of lots. Transformed by the new vision team, this community has been reinvigorated as an amenity-rich neighborhood. The landscape architects convinced the developer to convert the shuttered course into 53 acres of olive trees, that once mature, will be processed into branded olive oil, bottled for residents and sold at local farmer's markets. An extensive trail network connects 97 acres of desert open space, rolling hills of olive groves, community gardens, dog parks and oasis-like social spaces with lake and mountain views. The 7-acre center will feature a glass-walled fitness center, two resort-style pools, community gardens, bocce ball courts, event areas and a dog agility park. The contemporary architecture is artfully framed with geometries of succulents and date palms underplanted in vibrant bands of bougainvillea. The oasis setting falls away into olive groves and panoramic views to the mountains beyond.

Baker Ranch
Orange County, California
Rolling hills and a backdrop of mountain vistas complement Baker Ranch, a 350 acre master planned community's landscape that had many intricacies, challenges and rewards during the design process. From the start resort -style living was the focus of the developers and the team they put together delivered. Due to the large scale of the single-family home community, landscape is the bond that ties Baker Ranch together. Featuring three unique recreation centers, four neighborhood parks, one community park, a dog park and a linear promenade with multi-use trails linking all neighborhoods appeal to active-minded buyers. The central linear 8-acre park serves as the recreational and social heartbeat of the community as well as the major pedestrian circulation through the master plan. Our goal was to re-form a conventionally graded park into a non-traditional space that creates engaging experiences for people of all ages. The main clubhouse exudes leisure California ranch living including unpredictable special places for small and large groups to congregate. Creating unique statements using simple forms with modern shapes, stone entry walls are monumental and timeless. Randomly spaced trees along streets provide dense buffers for neighborhoods while the combination of tall palms and pines punch through to create a community-identifying skyline.
