Building Permits Rise in June

Single-family authorizations in June were at a rate of 407,000; this is 0.2 percent above the revised May figure of 406,000. Authorizations of units in buildings with five units or more were at a rate of 198,000 in June.


Privately-owned housing units authorized by building permits in June were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 624,000. This is 2.5 percent above the revised May rate of 609,000 and is 6.7 percent above the June 2010 estimate of 585,000. Single family units dropped 3.8 percent and 2 to 4 units fell 9.5 percent, but 5 or more units jumped up 40.4 percent.

The West was the region that fared the best with an increase of 20.5 percent overall and no change for single units. The Northeast fared the worst with an overall drop of 8.9 percent and decrease of 25.5 percent for single units.
