Building Permits Down in April

Single-family authorizations in April were at a rate of 484,000; this is 10.7 percent (???????(R)???????+???????(R)??????oe???????(R)???????+???????(R)????????1.1 percent) below the revised March figure of 542,000. Authorizations of units in buildings with five units or more were at a rate of 103,000 in April.


Privately-owned housing units authorized by building permits in April were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 606,000. This is 11.5 percent (±1.1 percent) below the revised March rate of 685,000, but is 15.9 percent (±1.3 percent) above the revised April 2009 estimate of 523,000.

For the year to date the country saw a total increase of privately owned housing units started of 19.3 percent, with increases of 36.7 percent for single units, 3.2 percent for 2 to 4 units and a decline of 24.8 percent for 5 or more units.

The Northeast was the region that fared the worst in the country with increases of 12.2 percent total and 39 percent for single units. The Midwest fared the best at 33.9 percent total and 44.4 percent single unit increases.
