Bracing for El Ni????(R)????o

The latest forecast from the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center put the chance that the ongoing El Ni????(R)????o conditions will continue through the U.S. winter at 95 percent.

Sea surface temperature anomalies in the eastern and central portions of the equatorial Pacific Ocean were well above average, and had generally increased. The agency reported that the atmosphere was in lockstep with the oceanic anomalies resulting in significant wind anomalies.

All of this and more point to a strong El Ni????(R)????o peaking in late fall or early winter. Weather forecasts from the event generally predict below-average temperatures and above-median precipitation across the southern tier of the United States, and above-average temperatures and below-median precipitation over the its northern tier.

The recent storms that caused major mudslides in Southern California are not related to El Ni????(R)????o according to meteorologists, but do show the type of damage to expect if the predicted levels of rainfall materialize from the warm weather pattern.
