Bracing for Effect of EPAs Ethanol Ruling

The decision by EPA to approve E-15 fuel, with 15 percent ethanol, serves as a well-justified source of concern for outdoor power equipment manufacturers and owners. According to the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), more than 200 million pieces of outdoor power equipment have significant risk of operational failure or performance issues if owners fuel their equipment with E-15.

''It's easy to understand why manufacturers, dealers and owners of power equipment are very concerned about the corrosive nature of ethanol,'' said Mike Moorhead, president of TruSouth Oil. ''Ethanol may be appropriate for automobiles, but it's having disastrous consequences in both the small engine and marine industries. From complete failure of a product to significant decline in equipment performance to expensive repairs, ethanol is a major problem for the two-cycle engine.''
