Botaniko Residential Development, Weston, FL

Botaniko is a new residential development located on a 120-acre former golf course in the community of Weston, Florida. Just half-a-mile from Everglades National Park, it was designed as an ecotone where the Everglades biome and a suburban community merge. Surrounded by narrow waterways, this underutilized site was polluted by arsenic-laden herbicides and required intensive remediation. Unlike other developments in the region, Botaniko was designed primarily with native plants, selected to match those of the Everglades, to create a drought-tolerant, diverse landscape while providing the required sense of lushness. Dense green buffers create natural habitat along the community's streetscapes, parks, lakes, and perimeter.

To create more buildable lots while retaining the total project surface area, the existing lakes, which make up a quarter of the site, were carefully reshaped. The lakes are part of the city's stormwater management system and maintained as natural habitat as part of a wetlands mitigation plan. And while the traditional waterfront home backs up straight to the water's edge, Botaniko's 125 single-family contemporary residences have extensive plantings at the back, which protect the waterways from any runoff. Individual lots were carefully designed so that all back up to a lake or a landscape buffer, providing all homeowners with expansive natural views.
The upcoming Stormwater and Erosion Control Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. This project was not chosen for a Feature in the issue, but we at LandscapeArchitect.com thought the project deserved to be showcased online . . .
