Huntsville, Alabama
by Keziah Olsen, LASN

Bostick Landscape Architects (BLA) celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2025. In 2010, the firm began designing a wide range of environments for a varying clientele and has since become a leader in park and learning landscapes for both K-12 and Higher Education facilities. BLA believes that client participation in the creative process is essential to creating public and private spaces that foster use and stimulate the user. They listen to the needs of their clients and work hand-in-hand to attain their objectives to deliver spaces that invite and inspire.

University of Alabama Altenkirch Lawn; Huntsville, AL

The north end of the University of Alabama in Huntsville was selected for the next phase of the Altenkirch Lawn. Integral to this project was providing opportunities to define open spaces on the east side of the library and to clean up and create student living spaces on the west side of the library. An existing outdoor stage was redeveloped to create a functional space for performances, and the spectator area was defined with artificial turf into a small amphitheater. A beautiful grove of trees was turned into a student seating space. As part of the project, an aging sand volleyball court was replaced and enhanced with hangout space. Drainage was an issue at the base of the volleyball court, and the design worked to protect the building from flooding issues. Over 70 trees were added to the campus as part of this project, enhancing the shade canopy for the college. Photo Credit: Thru the Viewer

Councill High Park; Huntsville, AL

To honor the former African American High School and the history of ending segregation in Alabama, which sprung up from this location, the city of Huntsville created a new downtown park. The walks are laid out to match former hallways of the school, and specific congregating areas were outlined through lawn borders, seat walls, and plants. A replica of the school's doorway was constructed to mimic the school arrival. All the brick was salvaged from the school building. In the courtyard, a sculpture of the school's namesake was placed in the center of a body of pavers, which are etched with every known Councill Student from its 100-year history. Councill High Park has received an Alabama ASLA Honor Award, as well as an Outstanding Achievement in Historic Preservation Award from the Huntsville History Foundation.

Nexus on Holmes; Huntsville, AL

Sitting adjacent to the University of Alabama in Huntsville, this student apartment building was developed to accomodate students who still want to be near campus. The walkability to campus is a plus, and the design is full of amenities. The project contains two programmed spaces, an active courtyard with a pool, a built-in gaming board, a cornhole lawn, hammocks and hang out spaces, and grills for students to cook on. The other courtyard contains opportunities to slow down, relax, study, and chill in hammocks, benches, or at the firepit. Photo Credit: Thru the Viewer

Legacy Park; Huntsville, AL

After completing a new high school in the area, the city took the land where the old campus stood to create a community hub in the competition gym from the school and allow the development of a new neighborhood on the remaining site. A five-acre parking lot was turned into a vibrant community park with pavilions for picnics and a bandshell/small amphitheater area, a playground, open space, perennial/pollinator space, outdoor fitness with local art in the park sign, and a grassy hill for sledding on cardboard. The park completion has spurred the residential growth of the old high school campus, serving as a central space for community activities from reunions to civic groups to play for children. The pavilions were presented two North Alabama AIA awards in 2025 for their unique architecture. Photo Credit: Thru the Viewer
