Remember when President Bush signed the $33.8 billion appropriations bill for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in Oct. 2006? We recall it only because it included funding for the erection of a fence along the U.S./Mexican border. At the time, many speculated the fence would never get built. Well, as of Oct. 1, 2007, 70 miles of border fence has been completed near the Arizona border towns of Douglas, Naco, Sasabe, San Luis and Yuma. If the schedule is kept to, there will be a run of 370 miles of fence here by the end of 2008. At the moment, there is a total of 145 miles of fencing along the U.S. southern border. The president?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s goal is for 700 miles of new fence, although the U.S. border with Mexico runs 1,951 miles, according to the International Boundary and Water Commission. The fence design in Arizona varies, but it all is constructed of heavy metal?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????corrugated, mesh or concrete-filled metal posts (bollards). Some sections have a secondary fence. ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????Lizard grates?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? let reptiles and other small critter squeeze through, but not humans.
