Border Fence Dominates Arizona Desert Landscape?EUR??,,????'?????<




The formidable metal border fence separating Naco, Ariz. from Naco, Sonora, Mexico is part of 70 miles of border fence in Arizona just completed. In most places, the fence rises 15 feet and extends more than five feet into the ground. By comparison, the Berlin Wall (Aug. 1961 to Nov. 1989) was 96 miles long, constructed of concrete and 11.8 ft. tall.

Remember when President Bush signed the $33.8 billion appropriations bill for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in Oct. 2006? We recall it only because it included funding for the erection of a fence along the U.S./Mexican border. At the time, many speculated the fence would never get built.

Well, as of Oct. 1, 2007, 70 miles of border fence has been completed near the Arizona border towns of Douglas, Naco, Sasabe, San Luis and Yuma. If the schedule is kept to, there will be a run of 370 miles of fence here by the end of 2008. At the moment, there is a total of 145 miles of fencing along the U.S. southern border. The fence design in Arizona varies, but it all is constructed of heavy metal?EUR??,,????'?????<

According to a 2006 study by The Pew Hispanic Center, as much as 45 percent of the illegal immigrant population legally passed through border check-points with visas that allowed them to reside or travel in the country for a limited time.
