The owners of this Boise, Idaho estate dreamed of bringing to their new home aspects of the places they had traveled to?EUR??,,????'?????<??oePortugal, Spain, Morocco and Italy. The home, a Spanish Colonial masterpiece, is located in the Boise foothills on the point of a quiet cul-de-sac, oriented to maximize 270-degree views. With vineyards to the southeast, and the city skyline to the northwest, the site offers a number of natural basalt rock outcroppings and grade changes.

Although Boise is referred to as the ?EUR??,,????'?????<?banana belt?EUR??,,????'?????<? of Idaho because of its relatively mild climate, there are still climactic limitations. The design intent was to extend the living environment, creating exterior rooms as well loved as those inside. Ideally this would allow a continuation of hardscape materials out into the courtyards and patio spaces, although use of many of the same materials would be exposed to the freeze thaw cycle and eventual damage. The design for the house culminated after years of collaboration between the owners, house designers and the builder. As work progressed, it was evident an additional perspective was needed to assure a continuity between the goals for the house and the landscape.

Ivy Design was called into the collaboration as specialists in creating unique landscapes. Whether classic or modern, large or small, Ivy Design takes the time and attention necessary to cull the character of each project to fully complement the architecture and the surroundings. With the house an incredible meld of unique, detail-laden, handcrafted materials, the landscape had to shine. The resulting master plan embodies an offering of many experiences, with the design evolving further through continued collaboration between Ivy Design and the owners.

The grounds surrounding the home are graced with an entry court, a pool terrace, a fireside nook/overlook, a parterre garden, a great lawn, a rose garden, a motor court, and a lower terrace orchard and kitchen garden. To accommodate the owner?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s love of detail, and the challenge of access to far and distant materials, the builder suggested the use of Mexican craftsmen to recreate design elements they cherished from the travels. Accents throughout the home feature Mexican handcrafted ironwork, stone and tile. Given these materials are not mass-produced, they exhibit extensive character and variation from one piece to the next, lending a custom quality to every feature. As meticulous detail for the home developed, Ivy Design developed an association with an importer specializing in custom stone, pavers, fountains and other handcrafted features.

Striving to go beyond the typical, Ivy Design developed an array of beautiful stone samples, rich red limestones to golden travertines, and multiple hues of cantera. With the existing natural basalt rock outcroppings shouldering the property, the sample of smooth-cut black basalt stone pavers was the obvious choice. These pavers present a deep, dark rich hue. Bordered with contrasting red limestone mowstrips, the pavings throughout the property present intense colors in sunshine. The hues are even deeper when wet, making them perfect for poolside.

Walking to the northwest through the side gate you arrive at the pool terrace, which is sited for privacy. The vanishing-edge pool grants view of the vineyards to the southeast and is shouldered by the natural basalt outcroppings and the upper fireside nook to the north. The grade change is graced with a variety of evergreen and blooms, with an accent on the use of desert-like species. The Chitalpa desert trees, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Pink Dawn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? and ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Morning Cloud,?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? soften the length of the stucco entry wall with their graceful and continuous bloom. Walking further to the north, the great lawn borders the rose garden, situated outside the kitchen and great room. Planted here are hostas, rhodies and ferns.

More recent work has included the lower terrace, which provides a fruit orchard and a raised kitchen garden, attracting the usual wildlife suspects: deer, bunnies, fox and coyotes. Although the wildlife is valued and welcomed, the replacement of landscaping is ongoing, as it seems even the ?EUR??,,????'?????<?deer proof?EUR??,,????'?????<? species fall prey to a very hungry animals. As Ivy Design continues collaboration with the owner, they have truly achieved a ?EUR??,,????'?????<?timeless landscape through signature design.?EUR??,,????'?????<? Most important, however, is that although we may feel the need to work a design a specific or certain way, it is paramount to achieve a design the owner feels is theirs, as we are not residing in their home for years to come, they are. Therefore, the ultimate residential design success is their comfort and the imprint of their own signature on their home.
