Biodiesel Fuels N.Y. Lawn Mowers

Biodiesel fuel looks and smells more like vegetable oil than the diesel fuel it can replace.

The University of Buffalo is converting to biodiesel fuel for campus trucks, cars and lawn mowers that now use traditional diesel. The experiment will produce data on the efficiency of using the fuel in lawn mowers for contractors, groundskeepers and other maintenance people.

Biodiesel is already used in UB?EUR??,,????'???s fleet of dump trucks, garbage packers and other noncritical equipment, said Paul Hoffman, fleet maintenance supervisor. By April, it will fuel the university?EUR??,,????'???s commercial lawn mowers as well.

Engines that run on diesel do not require conversion to run on biodiesel.

?EUR??,,????'??Our intent is to put it in any diesel-powered vehicles,?EUR??,,????'?? said Hoffman. ?EUR??,,????'??I?EUR??,,????'???m presuming that by next winter, we?EUR??,,????'???ll be running all of our fleet on biodiesel.?EUR??,,????'??

Hoffman said University Facilities is working with Robert Baier, executive director of the Industry/University Center for Biosurfaces and professor of oral diagnostic sciences in the School of Dental Medicine, to test the emissions of the equipment that is running on biodiesel versus petroleum diesel.

To ensure ?EUR??,,????'??solid data,?EUR??,,????'?? the emissions tests will run on several commercial lawn mowers that are ?EUR??,,????'??brand new and identical,?EUR??,,????'?? said Hoffman.
